Standards of Practice

These standards inform each professional, other health care members and consumers of the expectation of patient/client care. The framework of the standards is based on the components of assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation. Standards are a formal mechanism designed to ensure that professionals are effective in the delivery of services within the Digestive Health Clinic.

Program Vision
The program vision is to provide comprehensive care in the field of Gastroenterology designed to support the emergent and acute needs of our community.

A. Professional Behaviors — Individual

  1. Follow and support the standards of their professional association.
  2. Meet the criteria of specific professional job description and maintain competency of scope of practice as stipulated by the Digestive Health Clinic Inc.
  3. Function according to policies and practices of the Digestive Health Clinic Inc.
  4. Promote the mission statement of the Digestive Health Clinic Inc.
  5. Promote customer satisfaction and continuous quality improvement initiatives on an ongoing basis.
  6. Integrate the principles of GCP into own professional practice.
  7. Attend continuing education programs designed to increase clinical and technilogical knowledge and skill.
  8. Remain current of literature and research and integrate findings into practice when applicable.
  9. Act as a role model and preceptor for students, new employees and other health professionals as appropriate.
  10. Act as advocate for patient and family when needed.
  11. Display a professional image to patients, family and other health professionals.
  12. Support and respect the patient and their family’s need for information and participation into their plan of care.
  13. Respect the patient’s right to privacy and confidentiality.
  14. Assist the patient and family to cope with changes in physical condition.
  15. Promote patient and family education, health promotion and rehabilitation within the hospital and the community.

B. Professional Behaviors — as a member of the Health Care Team
The professional will be:

  1. Knowledgeable and have the ability to assess, intervene and evaluate within their specific scope of practice.
  2. Accountable for his/her own actions, recognizing own limitations.
  3. Organized and able to set priorities, anticipate changes and flexible enough to adjust plan of care accordingly. Delegate appropriately.
  4. Initiate and/or contribute to the plan of care utilizing input from patient, family and all health team members.
  5. Knowledgeable of his/her role within the interdisciplinary team.
  6. Knowledgeable of the roles and responsibilities of others on the health care team.
  7. Collaborate with all health professionals as required to provide timely optimal care.
  8. Participate and contribute as necessary in any patient team conferences.
  9. Use a systematic approach to document findings and interventions according to agency guidelines.
  10. Report changes in patient status and/or clinical findings to appropriate member of the health care team
  11. Continually evaluate professional practice against client outcomes and revises practice as required.
  12. Ensure appropriate documentation accompanies patient at all times
