Description

Colorectal problems such as skin tags, abscesses, fistulas, fissures, and warts are problems than can cause constant discomfort and/or pain to the individual. These problems can be alleviated as the surgeon assesses the problem and suggests a surgical procedure to repair it. A preparation is required in order for your physician to have the problem area visible.

The patient will be sedated and will also be given a local anesthesia in order to keep the patient comfortable. This means the patient will need a family member or friend to drive them home.

Sedation

Sedation is given by a physician through an IV site that is started before the procedure begins. This is to make sure that you are comfortable and without pain throughout the procedure. Your heart, blood pressure, and breathing is monitored throughout the procedure. The medication begins to work immediately and will last for the duration of the procedure.

Sometimes the medication can cause stinging at the injection site. Possibilities of side effects/complications can arise such as an allergic reaction, blood pressure fluctuations, and rare heart or lung complications. More serious complications are extremely rare. Please discuss any further questions with the anesthetist.

After the procedure, the patient is NOT allowed to drive for the remainder of the day/night. It is important that the patient is accompanied by a family member or friend for the remainder of the day/night.

Preparation:

The whole day before your procedure please remain on a liquid diet (cream soups, yogurt, jello, coffee, tea, and juices).

The night before your procedure, you must take 2 fleet enemas. Follow the instructions on the packaging.

Please note that fleet enemas can be purchased at your nearest pharmacy without a prescription. If you have any questions about the product, ask the pharmacist and they can help you.
